Production Levelling or Production Smoothing or EPEx. A key feature of the Toyota Production System. Heijunka is the levelling of the production schedule by averaging across both the volume and mix of different products.
This may be for example within a day or within a week. The aim is to support standard consistent working and so minimize wastes. In heijunka, the aim is to manufacture all products in proportion to demand in the shortest time – also called EPEx (Every Product Every time interval x). Heijunka requires quick changeovers (SMED). A Heijunka Box is used to schedule work in a Heijunka way.
