Single-Minute Exchange of Dies. Originally, the ability to change dies (for different models) on auto manufacturing equipment in less than ten minutes, rather than hours or days as was previously the case. Now refers to any rapid changeover which enables lean operations and increases flexibility. For example, applicable to transactional processes where staff are changing between software systems and databases for different products.
