Service industries deal directly with customers and provide advice, information and tailored products. Examples include banks, insurance companies, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, call centers, educational institutions, and local government.

There are service functions in manufacturing (e.g. sales support, help desk), and there are repetitive processes in service industries (e.g. cleaning in hospitals). See also Transactional Processes.
