Human comparison of product and output against specifications. Unnecessary inspection is waste. In lean, inspection should be done immediately after any operation in order to avoid passing on defects. However, inspection itself can never be 100% reliable. Ideally in lean, inspection is replaced with poka yoke (mistake proofing) within the process step. Inspection is part of appraisal cost in Cost of Quality.
