Building Gauge Visualization in Excel

One of the visualizations I love using in reports, especially financial, is the Gauge. This type of visualization is often used to display a single quantitative measure compared to a preset target value such as Actual versus Budgeted Revenue, Customer Satisfaction Index versus target, and many others.

With a shape resembling a speedometer, a gauge chart is quite common in various applications such as a car dashboard that makes it easy to give, at a glance, an overview of the performance compared to target.

Unfortunately, unlike other dashboarding applications such as Power BI, gauge is not a readily available chart or object in Excel. One needs to build it in multiple steps, usually involving a Doughnut chart with some tweaks.

This movie walks you through the steps to build a simple, yet neat and informative, gauge chart in Excel using the prevalent financial KPI of Actual versus Budgeted Revenue.

NB: Movie is annotated with each step.
